Students Get New Reading Assignment: Pick Books You Like

During the summer The New York Times ran the fourth of four articles in "The Future of Reading" series. The article features the strategies of a middle school English teacher in Georgia who allows her students to select their own reading material for reading workshop. This approach has resulted in an increase in the students' enthusiasm for reading and the development of literacy skills that resulted in higher scores in standardized tests. You can read the article from here and see some slides of how the teacher transformed her classroom into a more inviting reading center.
